Posted in

Phi Kappa Psi's Rush Program provides our rushees the opportunity to meet fellow rushees and each of the brothers, as well as the opportunity to gain a sense of the fraternity as a whole. Open Rush Events are open to everyone, and we encourage all gentlemen who are interested in learning more about Greek life to attend our events.

If you are interested in rushing Phi Kappa Psi, or if you have any questions and/or concerns about Rush, please contact Julius del Rosario (JuliusLdelRosario@gmail.com), Joseph Hill (joeh3721@verizon.net) or our rush commitee (rush-chair@upennphipsi.com).

What Is Rush?

Rush is the time when we get to know new guys and consider asking them to join our fraternity. It is also the opportunity for you to get to know the brothers, the house, and our culture and lifestyle. Basically, it is the chance to see if Phi Psi is right for you.

What Do I Need to Do?

Every freshman, sophomore, and junior (male only, of course) is invited to rush. To do so, you may attend our Open Rush events at the beginning of the spring semester. Come hang out and get to know the brothers and our fraternity. Further details to come.

What is the difference between Open and Closed Rush?

During Open Rush, we welcome any and all gentlemen interested in exploring Greek life and learning about Phi Kappa Psi. Following a week of Open Rush events during which rushees and brothers become acquainted with each other, the brothers will invite a select group of men to participate in Closed Rush. By invitation only, Closed Rush events provide the chance to really get to know the brothers on a more personal level.

What is Pledging?

During pledging, pledges learn about the traditions and history of Phi Kappa Psi. They also establish bonds of brotherhood within the pledge class and with active brothers. Pledging is a unique experience, a time to create lasting memories and friendships, as well as a time to develop leadership and time management skills.

What is the time commitment for pledging and will it affect academics?

Pledging is certainly a commitment, but the amount of time that you devote to it depends on you. The more time you put in, the more valuable your experience will be. Pledging takes time but is definitely manageable. Phi Kappa Psi is committed to the academic success of its members; in fact it is our top priority. We exist to complement and support the academic experience of each of our members. Phi Psi at Penn consistently ranks among the top groups in terms of GPA. Nothing can come close to the value of an older chapter brother there to guide you through the toughest of scholastic challenges.

Does Phi Psi Haze?

The Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity has a zero-tolerance policy against hazing in any form. It is against the Fraternity's behavioral policies, not to mention the law. Phi Psi chapters utilize their collective influence to hold themselves to being men of excellence who behave responsibly. This means that Phi Psi chapters don't haze their new members, they obey the law, and they act in a manner that brings honor not just to themselves but to Phi Psis everywhere. Please check out more information on Phi Phi's Hazing Policies.

A Great Decision

Though you may have been exposed to negative stereotypes of fraternities, joining a Greek organization is one of the best decisions your son can make during his college years. Over 150 years ago, our founders laid the basic principles and values of an organization that complemented our college education by giving back to our communities; the best way to put an education to use.

As a Phi Psi, your son will learn how to lead and compromise within a group while serving on committees and in chapter meetings and to hone those skills, he will have access to Phi Kappa Psi’s leadership schools held annually across the country. He will discover “The Great Joy of Serving Others” through Phi Psis numerous service initiatives and dedication to our communities. He'll be given the tools and confidence to strive for high grades through our chapter scholarship programs and rewarded through our Foundation's numerous grants and scholarships. The chapter atmosphere will promote diversity in your son's life and encourage him to join other groups on campus to better himself. Perhaps most importantly, he'll have a network of over 70,000 brothers across the world to help and mentor him through every stage of his life.

The phrase "helicopter parent" is over-dramatic, but parents are clearly more involved in the decisions their sons make today than in the past. Our goal is to help you understand Phi Kappa Psi and all of its benefits, while letting you know about our risk management policies and the expectations that we hold for every member of the Fraternity. If you have questions about your son joining Phi Kappa Psi, please contact the Headquarters at 1-800-486-1852, or contact our Rush Chair at rush-chair@upennphipsi.com
